Hechos 2: 5 – 18. Ahora, habían judíos devotos de todas las Naciones debajo del cielo viviendo en Jerusalén. Y en esto el sonido de la multitud reunida estaban confusos, porque estaban hablando en la lengua nativa de cada uno. Maravillados y atónitos se preguntaron, acaso no son todos estos que están hablando Galileos? Como es que cada uno de nosotros podemos escuchar en nuestra propia lengua? Partos, Medos, Elamitas y residentes de Mesopotamia, Judea en Capadocia y en el Ponto y Asia

En Erigia y Panfilia y Egipto y las partes de Libia que pertenencen a Cirene y los visitantes de Roma, ambos Judios y prosélitos, cretenses y Arabes les oímos hablar de las obras de Dios en nuestras lenguas y todos estaban maravillados y perplejo el uno a otro, ¿Qué significa esto?o  Y otros burlándose decían, ellos están llenos del nuevo vino.

Pero, Pedro poniéndose de pie con los once, alzó su voz y se digirió a Ellos, hombres de Judea y todo el que vive en Jerusalén,  que esto les sea de conocimiento a ustedes, escuchen a lo que digo, de hecho, estos no están borrachos a como ustedes suponen porque apenas son las nueve de la mañana. Esto es lo que fue declarado por el Profeta Joel, en los últimos días será, Dios quien declare, que derramare mi espíritu en toda carne y sus hijos e hijas profetizaran, y sus jóvenes verán visiones y sus ancianos tendrán sueños. Incluso en mis siervos y siervas derramare mi Espíritu y profetizaran.

Como Pastor, estoy bajo cierta obligación a no solo hablar la verdad pero hablar la verdad con amor, así que quiero hablar esta verdad de la forma más amorosa que sea capaz de decirla: Nuestro Presidente es peligrosamente estúpido.

La decisión que anuncio el Jueves con retirarse del tratado climático de Paris, fue ignorante en muchos niveles que es difícil saber por dónde empezar.

Ambos Programas noticiosos y comediantes han estado meneando sus cabezas diciendo que Estados Unidos se une a Siria y Nicaragua como las únicas Naciones del mundo que no han firmado este acuerdo no obligatorio que hace sugerencias modestas de como quizás salvemos nuestro planeta de la destrucción. Debo alzar la voz en defensa de Nicaragua. Y seguro Siria atascada en una letal guerra civil no está tomando decisiones  sobre nada pero periodistas y programas de debate, anfitriones hacen burla nuestra que de repente estemos agrupado con lugares primitivos como Nicaragua.

Bueno, eso no es lo que aquí esta ocurriendo. No somos compañeros de Nicaragua, Nicaragua no firmo El Acuerdo Climático de Paris porque ellos no creían que no iba lo suficientemente lejos. Nicaragua no produce carbón, o petróleo, o gas. Por la mayor Parte, Nicaragua fue convertida en una esclava nación de agricultura para producir café, fruta, caña de azúcar, tabaco por dueños de plantaciones europeos y estadounidenses. Y ahora como parte de sus cosechas no están en demanda en el mercado, el crecimiento de la Industria en son las Zonas Francas manufacturera que son construidas por Surcoreanos, compañías de ropas que reclutan a los jóvenes Nicaragüenses a trabajar 14 horas al dia en condiciones miserables.

Mis amigos, hermanos y hermanas en Nicaragua están de buscar su salida desde hace 2 siglos de pobreza impuesta y esclavitud pero aun allí, ellos saben muy bien lo que los Europeos y Estadounidenses le han hecho a su medio ambiente y el medio ambiente del mundo debe parar.  Asi que hacen burla del Presidente Daniel Ortega por ser el presidente de un país del tercer mundo si ustedes quieren, pero Él es un intelectual y un gigante moral comparado al presidente actual de Estados Unidos.

A como la mayoría de la gente pensante e incluso los mas tontos hacen ruido en mi jardín vegetal, estaba furioso con Trump en Jueves en la tarde cuando hizo este anuncio. Pero estas son algunas mitigadas consideraciones:

La Primera: a como lo señalo el gobierno de Nicaragua, El Acuerdo de Paris estaba sin diente, un acuerdo sin diente, que no era más que un modesto paso hacia adelante a un acuerdo mundial al que deberíamos de intentar para detener al planeta de prepararse para un amplio suicidio. No me gusto cuando se firmó porque apenas era mejor que nada cuando el problema del cambio climático es el retador problema que el mundo está enfrentando ahorita y se necesita abordarlo  ferozmente, sin hoyos de barrera en un Heroico Esfuerzo.

La segunda cosa a considerar es que el idioma del acuerdo exige un limpio y completo largo periodo de advertencia de cualquier nación que se esté saliendo tal como la decisión de Trump que no puede ser efectiva sino hasta el otoño de 2020, no hay forma posible y virtual que aun hasta entonces el siga siendo el presidente. No estoy loco acerca de cualquier prospecto alineado en el dogado o la espera para que tome su lugar pero tengo la esperanza que nuestro próximo presidente se tome el medio ambiente más en serio.

La conversación con más sentido debe de ser por qué Trump querría retirarse del Acuerdo de Paris. El ignorantemente apoya a la Industria de Carbón, no te encuentras persona en las áreas donde se produce el carbón que estén felices. Yo vengo de un lugar de Carbon, y si les puedo asegurar algo: Nunca conocerás a un minero de carbón  que quiera que

sus hijos o hijas tengan una carrera que tenga que ver con minería. Es sucia, un trabajo peligroso y yo no es más una buena forma de vivir. En el Estado de Kentucky ya no hay ni un solo sindicato de trabajo en las minas.

Y cuando presionados, aun ejecutivos del Carbon reconocen que el buen pago en los trabajos en la industria de carbón ya no regresara. La demanda del carbón está disminuyendo y que en las pocas áreas donde queda algún mercado, el proceso minero está siendo automatizado para que menos y cada vez menos se crean trabajos atravez de la minería. Ya los empleos en el campo de la energía renovable está muy delante de los trabajos mineros y esa anchura no crecerá del todo.

Wisnton Churchill, a menudo es citado por haber dicho que siempre puedes contar en los estadounidenses para hacer lo correcto cuando han agotado todas las otras posibilidades. La gran verdad es que siempre podes contar en los estadounidenses en hacer la cosa correcta cuando la cosa correcta se convierte en ganancias. Las Industrias del petróleo y del carbón han mantenido a esta nación rehén por siglos cuando debimos haber cambiado a un tránsito masivo de energía renovable pero el futuro está determinado por el mercado y mientras la energía solar y de viento es más alcanzable, los peligros medios ambientales del petróleo y el carbón serán reemplazados.

Tristemente, sin embargo, parte de tener un presidente desinformado al timon en un tiempo de cambio como el nuestro es que en vez de recoger las ganancias inesperadas de las tecnología nosotros nos sentaremos a un asiento trasero, atados a las tecnologías del siglo 19, mientras China se apura a producir los paneles mundiales solares y turbinas de vientos. Trump enrumba Estados Unidos de America hacia la desolación y la pobreza con una mueca de sonrisa ignorante en su cara.

Las Unicas Personas que se encuentran feliz respecto a los eventos de esta semana, son los Nacionalistas, los aisladores, que America Primero y America solo facciones atemorizadas de nuestra Nacion. Tistemente no es un pequeño segmento de la sociedad. El Nacionalismo es una pieza de la mismo paño como el racismo, o tribalismo. Es parecido al partidismo, a la homofobia y a la exclusión de religión.

Lo vemos exhibido en el hombre del descarrilamiento del tren en Portland, gritándole a dos jovencitas quienes son distintas a su tribu y raza y quien termino matando a los hombres que saltaron a defender a las mujeres. Lo vimos en el trágico bombardeo de Birghman en el cual un nativo nacido Brit mato a niños de su propio vecindario porque estaba ultrajado por la forma que sus familiares musulmanes indiscriminadamente están siendo asesinados en Medio Oriente.

Estoy conciente que me he beneficiado de varias maneras del privilegio del blanco pero reconozco que dicho privilegio esta herrado y estoy ansioso de ver las instituciones quienes lo perpetúan a desmantelarlo. Donald Trump, sin embargo, apela a las personas que ven su privilegio blanco desvanecerse y que temen hasta la muerte y que quieren hacer lo que puedan hacer a su alcance para mantener este vestigio de sus poderes heredados.

Hoy dos formas de ver el mundo. Neil DeGrasse Tyson tiene en casi en un clarida budista, dice que todos estamos conectados el uno al otro biológicamente y hacia la tierra químicamente y al universo automáticamente. Pero nuestro presidente negar la radiación que proviene de una fallida planta Nuclear del Japón y que ahora esta llegando a las costas del Oeste de Estados Unidos y que esa quemazón de carbón en Springfield y que esta hundiendo Naciones Isleñas el pacifico sur bajo olas o mareas que aumentan.

Hoy es el día de Pentecoste en la iglesia común Cristiana según su calendario, Pentecostal el texto tomado del segundo capitulo de Hechos en el cual Lucas toma un considerable privilegio literario de describir un evento ficticio pero muy simbolico donde amigos de Jesus de forma repentina fueron capaces de hablar lenguas de docenas distintas naciones como símbolo de unidad, no una unidad global porque toda la gente preocupada eran justos Judios quienes venían de distintos lugares no te sorprenderas escucharme decir que las religiones de costumbre es utilizada para dividir peronas y Lucas wstaba construyendo un caso para que la religión uniese personas.

Es un debate que se conyeba ferriamente dentro de las paginas de la Biblia, la mayor parte del viejo testamento concierne en hacer que los judíos sean asimilados dentro de otras naciones, religiones e imperios de su vecindario.

Ellos querían preservar su raza, su religión mediante intervenciones y asesinatos si fuese necesario y rivales a su descendencia. Seria bueno imaginar que la teología del Nuevo Testamento completamente repudiara el sectarismo, nacionalismo, racismo, perspectivas excluvistas y a veces lo hizo pero no siempre.

Incluso entre los evangelios, no hay ni un pequeño debate. Lo ves expresado de forma distinta. En el mas antiguo de nuestros evangelios, Marcos cita a Jesus refutando a sus discípulos por intentar de construir lo siguiente estrechamente, el cita a Jesus en el capitulo 9 diciendo, quienes no estén en contra de nosotros esta con nosotros. 30 años después cuando mateo grandemente esta copiando el trabajo  de Marco para hacer el suyo el cambia completamente justamente y anchamente a una declaración inclusiva dentro del sentimiento opuesto. Mateo 12: 30 dice Jesus: Quien no este conmigo esta en contra mi.

Lucas edita lo de Marco de tal forma que incluye mas mujeres, mas gentiles y trata de darnos a un Jesus mas inclusivo. Dos generaciones mas tarde, alguien escribe el evangelio de Juan que incluso lectores casuales tiene que hacer notar la combustión de diferencia entres Judios y Cristianos.

Trump quiere que le temas a los Musulmanes, para que le podamos prohibir nuestro país. Quiere que le temas a los Mejicanos para que podamos gastar billones de un muro, y quiere que le temas a la ciencia porque el es un idiota pero no estoy de acuerdo.

Quiza hubo un tiempo donde el tribalismo sirvió como una meta para sobrevivir. Ellos o nosotros, pensando quizá haya ayudado a los Judios a sobrevivir a los Hiteitas, hivitas, Jebsuti, pero no, entre mas vulnerable seas a los inmigrantes a que tomen el trabajo o que un terrorista que filtre e medio de refugiados pero mas alla de todos los medios que so nos levantan en nuestro primitivo cerebro nos refuta nuesta concienca moderna que debe afirmar que no hay sobrevivencia de un grupo mediante la extinción de tribus rivales.

Todos estamos juntos en esto.

Cuando las tuberías de DALP se filtren y que lo harán, dentro del Rio Missouri, no serán solo los Sioux quienes tendrán agua contaminada. Cuando el humbo de Belch de las minas de carbón pasen al aire no solamente serán los niños de los pobres quienes tendrán asma. Cuando los niveles del océano se levanten por el deshielo de los tempanos de hielo, no solamente las zonas costeras serán afectadas porque el gas metano secuestrado se libere del derrita miento del hielo te encontrara incluso en la cima de las montañas.

Esta procupado por el medio ambiente es una opción. Es una opción de que como vivo afectara a otras personas incluso a personas que aun no han nacido. Donald Trump esta intentando de Manipular esta nación mediante la apelación de sus temores mas primitivos. Yo estoy intentando apelar a tu mejor y mas alto pensamiento and al mejor pero mejor de tu carácter noble.

Les estoy pidiendo que plantes arboles del cual no comeras sus frutos y del cual no te sentaras a su sombra. Te estoy pidiendo que pienses en tus nietos y bisniestos quienes aun no han nacido. Les estoy pidiendo que piensen en los extranjeros de quienes ustedes no entienden su idioma y de quiene sus religiones es no salvadora para ti porque esa persona es parte de ti.

EL RABI PREGUNTO A SUS ESTUDIANTES. COMO PODEMOS DETERMINAR CUANDO TERMINA LA NOCHE Y EL DIA INICIA?

NO DIJO EL RABI. ES, DICE EL SABIO MAESTRO, CUANDO PUEDAS VER EN LA CARA DE OTRO SER HUMANO Y TENGAS SUFICIENTE LUZ EN TI PARA RECONOCER A TU HERMANO O HERMANA, HASTA ENTONCES ES DE NOCHE Y LA OBSCURIDAD AUN ESTA CON NOSOTROS.

Amigos, debemos de expeler la obscuridad de división y temor, y traer suficiente luz al mundo para que podamos reconocer a los refugiados Syrios como nuestros propios niños, para que nos demos cuenta que los musulmanes, Judios, católicos, Budistas, hindus, todos estamos luchando para encontrar el camino hacia el significado y propósito y sus creencias no nos toman nada de nosotros. Debemos de ver a los blancos, morenos, rojos, amarillos, y caras negras y ver las caras de nuestros hermanos y hermanas antes que sea demasiado tarde.

Acts 2:5-18    Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. ⁶And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each.⁷Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? ⁸And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? ⁹Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, ¹⁰Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, ¹¹Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.” ¹²All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” ¹³But others sneered and said, “They are filled with new wine.”

¹⁴But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. ¹⁵Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. ¹⁶No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: ¹⁷‘In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. ¹⁸Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. 

As a pastor, I am under a certain professional constraint to not only speak the truth but to speak the truth in love and so I want to speak this truth in the most loving way that I am capable of saying it:  Our president is dangerously stupid. The decision he announced on Thursday to withdraw from the Paris Climate Accord was ignorant on so many levels it is difficult to know where to begin.

Both news programs and comedians have been wagging their heads saying that now the United States joins with only Syria and Nicaragua as the only nations in the world that have not signed onto this non-binding agreement that makes modest suggestions as to how we might save our planet from destruction. I have to speak up in defense of Nicaragua. Sure, Syria, deeply mired in a lethal civil war is not making good decisions about anything but journalists and talk show hosts have made fun of our suddenly being grouped with the likes of a primitive place like Nicaragua.

Well, that isn’t what is going on here. We are not a peer of Nicaragua. Nicaragua did not sign onto the Paris Climate Accord because they did not believe that it went far enough. Nicaragua does not produce coal, or oil, or gas. For the most part, Nicaragua was turned into an agricultural slave nation to grow coffee, fruit, sugar cane, and tobacco by European and American plantation owners. Now, as some of their crops are no longer in demand on the market, the growth industry in Nicaragua is sweatshops being built by South Korean clothing companies to recruit young Nicaraguans to work 14 hour days in miserable conditions.

My friends, my brothers and sisters in Nicaragua are trying to work their way out of two centuries of imposed poverty and slavery but even there they know very well that what Europeans and Americans have done to their environment and the environment of the world must stop. So, make fun of President Daniel Ortega for being the president of a poor third-world country if you want, be he is an intellectual and moral giant compared to the current president of the United States.

Like most thinking people and even some of the dumber rocks in my vegetable garden, I was furious with Trump on Thursday afternoon when he made this announcement. But there are some mitigating considerations:

The first being, as the Nicaraguan government pointed out, the Paris agreement was a fairly toothless accord that was little more than a modest step towards global agreement that we would try to stop preparing for planet-wide suicide. I didn’t like it when it was signed because it was barely better than nothing when the problem of climate change is the single most important challenge facing the world right now and it needs to be addressed in a no-holes-barred ferocious and heroic effort.

The second thing to consider is that the language of the accord requires a fairly lengthy warning period for any nation pulling out of it such that Trump’s decision cannot go into effect until the fall of 2020 and there is virtually no way that he will still be president at that time. I’m not crazy about any of the prospects lined up in the dugout to take his place but I am hopeful that our next president will take the environment more seriously.

The meaningful conversation may be about why Trump would want to withdraw from the Paris Accord. He ignorantly trumpets support for the coal industry though you don’t find many people in coal producing areas who are cheering. I come from coal country and I can tell you this: you will never meet a coal miner who wants their sons or daughters to have careers in the mines. It is nasty, dangerous work and it is no longer a good living. In the state of Kentucky there is no longer a single union job in the mines.

And, when pressed, even coal executives acknowledge that the good paying jobs in coal are not coming back. The demand for coal is decreasing and where some market remains, the mining process is being automated so that fewer and fewer jobs are created through mining. Already the jobs in the renewable energy field are way ahead of mining jobs and that gulf will only grow larger.

Winston Churchill is often quoted for having said that you can always count on Americans to do the right thing when they have exhausted all other possibilities.

The larger truth is that you can always count on Americans to do the right thing when the right thing becomes profitable. The oil and coal industry have held this nation hostage for a century when we should have been switching to mass transit and renewable energy but the future is determined by the marketplace and as wind and solar energy is more affordable, the environmental hazards of coal and oil will be replaced.

Sadly, however, a part of having an uninformed president at the helm in a time of change like ours is that rather than reaping the windfall of changing technologies, we are going to take a backseat, tied to 19^th century technologies, while China gears up to produce the world’s solar panels and wind turbines. Trump is driving America towards isolation and poverty with an ignorant grin on his face.

The only people who are happy about the events of this week are the nationalists, the isolationists, the “America first” and “America only” frightened faction of our country. Sadly, this is not a small segment of the society. Nationalism is a piece of the same cloth as racism, or tribalism. It is akin to partisanship, homophobia, and religious exclusivism.

We see it exhibited in the deranged man on a train in Portland, yelling at two young women who are different from his tribe and race who ended up killing the men who jumped up to defend the women. We saw it in the tragic bombing in Birmingham in which a native born Brit killed children from his own neighborhood because he was outraged by the way that his Muslim relatives are being indiscriminately killed in the Middle East.

I am aware that I have benefited in very many ways from white privilege but I recognize that white privilege is wrong and I am eager to see the institutions that perpetuate it dismantled. Donald Trump, however, appeals to people who see their white privilege being diminished and they are scared to death and they want to do whatever they can to hold onto the vestiges of their inherited power.

These are two different ways of seeing the world. Neil DeGrasse Tyson has, in almost Buddhist clarity, said that we are all connected, to one another biologically, to the earth chemically, and to the universe atomically. But our president wants to deny that radiation from a failed nuclear plant in Japan is now reaching the west coast of America and that burning coal in Springfield is sinking island nations in the South Pacific under rising tides.

Today is Pentecost in the common Christian calendar and Paul read the traditional Pentecost text from the 2^nd chapter of Acts in which Luke takes considerable literary privilege to describe a fictional but very symbolic event in which the friends of Jesus were suddenly able to speak the languages of dozens of different nations as a sign of unity… not really global unity because all of the people concerned were righteous Jews who happen to come from different places but you will not be surprised to hear me say that religion is often used to divide people and Luke was building a case for religion uniting people.

It is a debate that is carried on ferociously within the pages of the Bible. Most of the Old Testament is concerned with keeping the Jews from being assimilated into the nations, religions, and empires of their neighbors.

They wanted to preserve their race and religion by not intermarrying and by killing, if necessary, any rivals to their heritage. It would be nice to think that the theology of the New Testament entirely repudiated that sectarian, nationalist, racist, exclusivist perspective and, at times, it did, but certainly not always.

Even among the gospels, there is no small amount of debate. You see it expressed in even subtle differences. In the oldest of our canonical gospels, Mark quotes Jesus as rebuking his disciples for trying to construct their following narrowly. He quotes Jesus in chapter 9 as saying, “Whoever is not against us is for us.” Thirty years later, when Matthew is largely copying Mark’s work into his own, he completely changes this fairly broad and inclusive statement into the opposite sentiment. Matthew 12:30 has Jesus saying:  Whoever is not with me is against me.

Luke edits Mark in a way that includes more women, more gentiles, and he wants to give us a Jesus who was more inclusive. Two generations later, someone writes the gospel of John which even a casual reader has to note is fueling the division between Jews and Christians.

Trump wants you to be afraid of Muslims so that we can ban them from our country. He wants you to be afraid of Mexicans so that we can spend billions on a boarder wall. And he wants you to be afraid of science because… he’s an idiot… but I digress.

There may have been a time when tribalism served the goal of survival.

“Them or us” thinking may have helped the Jews to survive where the Hittites, Hivites, and Jebusites didn’t. The more vulnerable may be afraid that immigrants will take their jobs or that terrorists might sneak in among refugees but beyond all the fears that rise out of our primitive brain stems our modern awareness must affirm that there is no more survival of one group by extinguishing rival tribes. We are all in this together.

When the DAPL pipeline leaks, and it will, into the Missouri River, it will not be just the Sioux who will have contaminated water. When we belch coal smoke into the air it is not just the children of the poor who get asthma. When sea levels rise from melting polar ice caps, it is not just coastal areas that will be affected because the sequestered methane gas released from that melting ice will find you even on the tops of mountains.

Being concerned about the environment is a choice. It is a choice of being concerned about the impact that how I live has on other people, even on people who are not yet born. Donald Trump is trying to manipulate this nation by appealing to their most primitive fears. I am trying to appeal to your best and highest thinking and to your very best and most noble character.

I am asking you to plant trees whose fruit you will never eat and under whose shade you will never sit. I am asking you to think of your grandchildren and great-grandchildren who are not yet born. I am asking you to think of the foreigner whose language you do not understand and whose religion is unsavory to you because that person is a part of you.

Henri Nouwen tells a story from Hassidic tradition:

The rabbi asked his students: "How can we determine … when the night ends and the day begins?"

One of the students suggested: "When from a distance you can distinguish between a dog and a sheep?"

Another guessed:

"It is when one can distinguish between a fig tree and a grapevine?" asked a second student. 

"No," the rabbi said.

"It is," said the wise teacher, "when you can look into the face of another human being and you have enough light in you to recognize your brother or your sister. Until then it is night, and darkness is still with us."

Folks, we need to dispel the darkness of division and fear and bring enough light into the world so that we can recognize Syrian refugees as our own children… so that we can realize that Muslims, Jews, Catholics, Buddhists, and Hindus are all struggling to find a path towards meaning and purpose and their beliefs do not take anything away from us. We need to be able to look into white, brown, red, yellow, and black faces and see the face of our brothers and sisters before it is too late.
